Mission:

The empowerment of persons with mental disabilities leading to competitive employment

Who We Serve:

Adults residing in Westchester County with a diagnosis of psychiatric and/ or ASD or Asperger's Syndrome. We have served over 1800 people in the past twelve years.

Philosophy:

As a charity with a mission of self-sufficiency for persons with mental and developmental disabilities, we believe knowing which job skills employers require is the cornerstone to operating a successful employment program.

To insure our students and instructors are aligned with the evolving job skill demands of the marketplace, we invited four talented Corporate leaders to help us develop our Cybility Jobs Program for adults on the Autism Spectrum; Thomas, Ethel, Susanne and Chris. In addition Dr. Don, will help us to refine the Cybility Tutorials for Teachers of High School Transition Programs.

Bios:

thomas-bigThomas, a life-long friend of the Center for Career Freedom, helped launch our Microsoft Office Training Program in 1998 when he headed up the College Boards IT Department. He convinced them to donate ten personal computers and then set-up our three websites; www.freecenter.org, www.eonomicsofrecovery.org and www.cybility.org. Thomas now heads up the IT Department of a major Pharmaceutical Company.


ethel-bigEthel earned her Bachelors of Science in Management Accounting. She came to the U.S. from the Philippines six years ago and started her own successful accounting firm specializing in small business payroll, bookkeeping and tax returns. She has donated her financial skills to develop Cybility Tutorials to teach the essentials of payroll, billing and data entry tasks to our interns using QuickBooks. Ethel also teaches Sunday School to children.


susanne-bigSusanne earned her B.S.in Economics and Business Administration Copenhagen Business School (CBS) in Denmark and her M.B.A. from The School of Business at SUNY Albany. She was the first female to be Awarded a full scholarship from the American Scandinavian Foundation (amscan.org). Susanne brings almost 20 years of experience in healthcare brand strategy and execution of marketing campaigns to physicians and patients. She has managed new product launches in the US and globally for brands such as NovoLog©, Levemir©, FlexPen© with media coverage featured on CNN, BNC and in publications such as the Wall Street Journal. She is now a marketing and PR consultant to the healthcare industry and has been on the board of a CT council focusing on improving health, nutrition and wellness in children. Susanne is the mother of two girls. She guides the Centers on-line Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations initiatives.


chris-bigChris has over 20 years of industry and consulting experience in the US and Europe delivering Business and Operations Strategy and large scale Transformation with IBM, Accenture, Wyeth (Pfizer), Novo Nordisk, Maersk and LEGO. With IBM, Chris was a global executive for M&A Integration. leadership assessment and change management delivering several billion dollars in acquisitions and currently leads an area of IBM global strategy. In addition to graduate legal studies at University of Copenhagen, Chris holds a BA in Philosophy from Fordham, MA in Political Science from Rockefeller College, SUNY Albany, and an MBA from Oxford University. In his capacity with Cybility, Chris acts as an adviser in multiple strategic and operational areas.

(It was Chris who coined the term 'Cybility' (Cyber + Ability) to describe our students extraordinary talents for learning and communicating via the Computer/Skype).


dr-don-bigDr. Don has over 35 years experience in the development, implementation and operations of Special Education Programs in the Newark, New Jersey and New York City Public School Systems. His most recent position was the Executive Director: Special Education for the Newark Public Schools where he was responsible for 7,200 students, ages 3-21, diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, medically fragile and behaviorally challenged.

With a staff of over 1,200 employees in 35 schools, Don pioneered initiatives in model educational programs including professional development partnerships with local universities, parent education and parent volunteer academies and inclusive work-study transitional programs. He increased attendance and reduced suspension rates by over 75% and, increased graduation rates by 200%. He is an Adjunct Lecture at Fordhams Graduate School of Education and a consultant helping to launch a charter school for students on the Autism Spectrum in New Jersey. Don earned a Doctorate Degree in Education, a Masters in Special Education and holds NYS and New Jersey certification in Administration and Teaching. Don oversees the Cybility tutorial Development, field testing and implementation.


steve-bigSteve has over ten years experience teaching persons with Psychiatricand/or Developmental Diagnoses (SSI/SSDI) to acquire Microsoft Office Skills, (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher, etc.) so they can become self- sufficient. He graduated from Iona College, is NYS ED Licensed and is a Master Microsoft Office Instructor.

 


joanne-bigJoanne has over twenty years experience as an Executive Secretary / Administrative Assistant at Readers Digest, Pepsi-Cola, IBM and Blue Cross Blue Shield. She knows what Corporate Executives want and how to meet rush schedules and deliver quality work.

Joanne is a certified Microsoft Instructor specializing in teaching MS Office Skills online via Skype. As a Job Coach, she supervises the Paid Jobs Program projects including data entry, internet searches and Special Occasion Cards. Joanne is also adept at instilling critical'work ethic' values in her student-interns.


 don-bigDon earned his B.A. in Psychology from N.Y.U.s College of Arts and Science, and a Masters in Mental Health Counseling from Long Island University. He interned at St. Vincents Hospital, Westchester. He founded the Center for Career Freedom in 1998.

Don has over 25 years of experience in training persons with psychiatric, developmental and physical disabilities in Microsoft Office Skills, Vocational and Government Benefits Counseling and supported employment.

Don also has 20 years of experience in the for-profit sector as a Marketing Consultant for such companies as IBM, Toyota, General Motors, Colgate-Palmolive, KFC, J Walter Thompson, BBDO, and the Pepsi-Cola Company. He is a member of the Board of Mental Health News and Autism Spectrum News. Don is a Vietnam era Veteran, a father of three sons and a grandfather of seven granddaughters.
